A sonnet by Revd. Hilary Benson

Intercessions for Sunday 31st May 2020

Heavenly Father,

The first disciples waited together for the coming of the Holy Spirit upon them in wind and flame.  As we celebrate that first Pentecost in our homes, may we be filled with your empowering energising Holy Spirit.  In our conversations with neighbours, family and friends help our faith in you to be a light in the lives of others.

Lord, in your mercy: hear our prayerPentecost: Why and How to Celebrate

We pray for people across the world, especially where natural disaster or political decisions have left so many in desperate need of the basics of life.  Bless the work of aid agencies, including the Mothers’ Union; may their workers remain safe and well as they bring food and medical supplies into dangerous situations.

Lord, in your mercy: hear our prayer

We thank you for our neighbours and our communities as we have come together in mutual aid and support.  We pray for our schools and nurseries as they prepare for a larger intake of pupils over the coming weeks.  We thank you for the hard work of teachers, delivery drivers, postal workers, supermarket staff, health and social care workers, emergency services throughout this crisis.

Lord, in your mercy: hear our prayer

We remember before you those who are ill, bereaved, depressed, lonely or in any kind of need.  Bring the light of your presence into their lives as they struggle with pain, thoughts and feelings.  We pray especially for (add the names of those you know) and for their families and friends.

Lord, in your mercy: hear our prayer

As we celebrate the Church’s birthday this week, keep us faithful, strong and aware of your unfailing love for us all.

Merciful Father: accept these prayers for the sake of your only Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ.  Amen
